What Is Assisted Living?

Senior care is a complex and sensitive topic, and you may not be familiar with everything that assisted living entails. Many people equate assisted living facilities with nursing homes, but there are actually several important differences between the two. In today’s post, we’ll explain what assisted living is and how can it benefit you or a loved one. Liberty Ridge Senior Living is proud to provide Lexington with high-quality senior care and faith-based assisted living facilities. We’re one of three locations in Kentucky that is permitted to label itself an assisted living facility, and we strive to ensure the comfort of each of our residents. What Is Assisted Living?

The phrase ‘assisted living’ is problematically vague and often carries negative connotations. The truth is that there isn’t uniform agreement as to what assisted living entails, and there are many different forms that assisted living can take. Many Liberty Ridge residents don’t require the services of a full-time caretaker, but due to any number of factors, assistance with daily activities is welcome. In the majority of cases, assisted living is very much like living in an apartment with a helping hand. Assisted living staff members help residents with everything from medication management to shopping for groceries, and assisted living services are almost always personalized for each resident. At Liberty Ridge, we allow each of our residents to choose the level of care they would like to receive, and we find that this provides the ideal balance of independence and assistance.

How Is Assisted Living Different From a Nursing Home?

As we noted in the previous section, assisted living facilities are typically designed for residents who would like to maintain their independence while also receiving individualized assistance when they need it. Nursing homes provide a much greater level of care and attention, and nursing homes typically employee enough staff members to operate 24 hours a day. Nursing home residents commonly have severe health conditions that require close monitoring, and the majority of their daily lives are spent with a nurse.

Another difference between assisted living facilities and nursing homes is the outward appearance. While nursing homes often appear to be apartment/hospital hybrids, assisted living communities tend to look like high-end apartment complexes. You’ll find dogs playing with their owners, neighbors conversing, and grandchildren visiting in many assisted living facilities, and many of the Liberty Ridge residents report that their assisted living communities feel as lively and friendly as their previous residences.

We hope that this post has clarified any questions you may have had about assisted living. Liberty Ridge offers a variety of comfortable and caring faith-based communities, including independent living and memory care neighborhoods. Our communities come with all-inclusive facilities, including laundry and long-distance phone calls.
