Fitness Tips Continued

Warm Up

Loosening up your muscles and stretching before you work out is a good idea, no matter what you’re doing. An injury of any kind can put you on the couch for weeks or months at a time, and you don’t want your hard work to be impeded by a strain or muscle tear. Take 10 to 15 minutes to stretch and warm up before you exercise, making sure to include all of your major muscle groups.

Stay Consistent

No matter what you’re doing or how old you are, consistency is a key component of any health and exercise routine. Showing up just once or twice a week is great, but you’ll see much better results if you can stick to a schedule and incorporate at least 30 minutes of exercise into your daily routine.

Find the Right Exercises

As a unique individual, it’s important to find exercises that work for you. We’ve listed three great options below, but you can always speak to an instructor at our assisted living apartments to ask for personalized recommendations!

  • Light weights: Incorporating light weights into your routine is a great way to improve your aerobic endurance while also building strength and muscle.
  • Water aerobics: Water-based exercise is a fantastic way to stay in shape without putting undue strain on your body. Try swimming laps, working with light weights, or walking from one end of the pool to the other.
  • Yoga: While many people believe that yoga is too strenuous for seniors, it’s actually one of the best ways to stay in shape as you age. In addition to working multiple muscle groups at once, yoga helps to relieve stress and promote a sense of well-being.
